TEST PROCEDURE |
RESULT |
| Accelerated Weathering UV Resistance |
Atlas Carbon Arc Weather Ometer Type EH-Continuous UV and water spray cycling at elevated temperature. ASTM D822, ASTM G23 |
After 2,000 hours of continuous exposure, Tough Stuff AC5300 showed no deterioration, no surface checking, cracking, or delamination. |
Resistance to Wind Driven Rains
|
Pressurized test chamber producing 5 " (12.5 cm) of water pressure, equivalent to 100 m.p.h. wind pressure (161 km./hr.). Federal Spec TTC-555B |
During 40 hours of continuous testing, no apparent moisture penetrated the Tough Stuff AC5300 sample. |
| Resistance to Salt Spray |
Harshaw Salt Spray Cabinet (5% NaCl fog solution). ASTM B117 |
After 500 hours of continuous exposure, Tough Stuff AC5300 showed no deterioration, no surface chalking, cracking, or delamination. |
| Resistance to Mildew |
Five different fungus cultures grown on potato dextrose agar in an 86ºF (30ºC) incubator. ASTM G21 |
After 14 days, all Tough Stuff AC5300 samples showed absolutely no fungus growth. |
Film Breathing Ability
|
Honeywell Water Vapor Transmission Rate Tester. ASTM E398 |
At 15 mils dry (381 microns) Tough Stuff AC5300 has a perm rating of 4.5 allowing moisture vapor within building to pass through the coating while preventing the penetration of mass water from the exterior. |
| Elongation after Aging |
Atlas Carbon Arc Weather-Ometer Type EH, ASTM D822, ASTM G23, and Instron Universal Testing Instrument, ASTM D412. |
After 2,000 hours exposure in the Weather-Ometer, Tough Stuff AC5300 retained 95% of its elastomeric properties. |
| Low/High Temperatures |
Aged films tested in accordance with ASTM D822 in thermostatically controlled heat chamber and freezer. |
Films retained their ability to be flexed 180º without cracking at temperatures from -30ºF to 200ºF (34-94ºC) with no age hardening or slump. |

RELATIVE HUMIDITY
Can be applied at relative humidities up to 90%
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
GENERAL
BRUSH:
No reduction necessary. Use nylon/polyester brush. Do not over brush as material may start to pull.
ROLLER:
No reduction necessary. Use 1/2" to 1 1/2" nap synthetic rollers. Keep a wet edge to avoid ripping which may change appearance. If ripping is a problem, extend lap time to after materials have skinned. Avoid rapid rolling which causes bubbling.
AIRLESS SPRAY-HIGH VOLUME:
Pressure: 3,000-4,000 psi
Tip: .37-.56 reversible
Reduction: None necessary
PERFORMANCE TIPS
- DO NOT THIN
- POWER MIX BEFORE USING
HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS
- Walkways must be installed on insulated systems anytime considerable roof traffic is expected.
- An extra layer of polyester and Tough Stuff AC5300
Textured with #11 roofing granule can also be added to traffic
areas instead of walk pads.
MILDEW
- Must be removed by power washing and broom scrubbing with a solution of 16 oz. household bleach with 2 oz. Tough Stuff 404 or liquid detergent / gallon of water. Rinse clean and dry thoroughly
CURING PRECAUTIONS
- If moisture settles on uncured Tough Stuff AC5300 for a period of time, a brown residue may form on the surface. While this residue will not affect the performance of the cured film, it must be removed prior to applying an additional coat of Tough Stuff AC5300.
- A good way to avoid this residue is to broom off any water in the morning with a soft bristle broom while drying the roof. If residue has been allowed to dry, add clean water and broom scrub the surface, rinse off residue, and allow to dry.
- Stubborn areas may require hot water and trisodium phosphate solution.
- Common sense and strict adherence to application procedures will prevent this problem.
- Brown spots can also be scrub primed with Tough Stuff AC5600, allowed to dry, and recoated with Tough Stuff AC5300.
Please consult Coatings International for specific questions regarding the application of this product.
