APPLICATION PROCEDURES
GENERAL
- Do not open container until ready to use.
- Always apply Tough Stuff Stains in two separate applications. The first coat will penetrate and saturate the surface to form a color base. The second coat is applied perpendicular to the first coat to achieve color uniformity. Coarse surfaces such as split face and fluted block may require a third coat to achieve uniform color and sheen.
SURFACE PREPARATION
- All surfaces must be clean. fully dry and completely cured. They must be free from dust, curing agents, form release agents, efflorescence, scale or any foreign substances that may interfere with adhesion.
* Previous coatings should be completely removed to ensure adequate penetration.
- Hard or glazed surfaces such as dense or glazed brick or smooth concrete must be sweep blasted or acid etched to allow for adequate surface penetration.
- Tough Stuff stain can be applied over existing coatings providing the two coatings are compatible. A test area must be applied to ensure compatibility.
- Always contact the Coatings International, Inc. technical department for recommendations when the ability of the stain to penetrate the substrate is in question.
MIXING
- Material shall be mixed for a minimum of four (4) minutes prior to application. Use an air operated or explosion proof mixer with a blade capable of uniformly mixing the entire container.
SPRAY APPLICATIONS
- Spray the first coat in a uniform horizontal direction followed by a uniform overlapping vertical direction as soon as the first coat has dried.
- The spray gun should be held not more than 18 from the wall. Rough surfaces such as fluted block will require care to ensure that all angles are covered.
- Applicator should first test an inconspicuous area to best determine the proper absorption rates to achieve best color uniformity.
- A standard airless type capable of handling 2000 psi and at least one gallon per minute is required for best results.
- A reversible self-cleaning spray tip with an orifice size of .013 to .017 and a minimum 40° fan angle is recommended.
BRUSHING OR ROLLING
- When brushing or rolling, care should be taken to ensure that the same coverage rate as the spraying is used. Different coverage rates will result in color variation.

Notes:
* Apply approximately 1/2 the total number of gallons on the first coat. Use remainder on second coat.
|
# Apply approximately 2/3 the total number of gallons on the first application and the remaining 1/3 on the second application.
|
The above coverage rates are for estimating purposes only. Absorption rates will vary depending on the porosity of the substrate. Always allow for extra surface area when estimating fluted, raked and split faced surfaces.
APPLICATION TIPS
Due to inventory fluctuations there may be times when different batch numbers are delivered to fill a single order. It is the contractors responsibility to make sure that the same batch number is applied to the same side of the building or that the material is boxed together to insure even coverage and appearance. It is highly recommended to apply a sample on an inconspicuous area of the building prior to estimating the job to determine the best absorption rate and suitability of the application. Written approval should be obtained from the architect or the building owner prior to proceeding with the project.
PERFORMANCE TIPS
WATERPROOFING: Superior penetrating clear silicone rubber sealant is recommended to thoroughly saturate the surface to form an excellent water shed over the stain. This greatly extends the life of both the coating and the substrate.
CLEANUP INSTRUCTIONS
Clean equipment with mineral spirits. The lines of the spray equipment should be flushed thoroughly..
