PERFORMANCE FEATURES
- Prevents Water Penetration: The completed membrane effectively stops water penetration even under wind driven rains.
- Allows moisture to escape: Moisture can migrate freely from the interior in the form of moisture vapor.
- Self-Cleaning: Tough Stuff AC8020 has a unique blend of high performance resins to resist dirt pick up and stay clean.
- Applies Easily: The consistency of Tough Stuff AC8020 allows for easy application for both spraying and rolling.
- Elastomeric / Fills Cracks: The permanent and non-aging coating moves with the movement of the substrate. The elastomeric membrane will protect hairline cracks that may develop.
- One Component: No catalyzation is necessary. Tough Stuff AC8020 is a ready to use material. Shelf life is unlimited when properly stored.
- High Resin Content: Tough Stuff AC8020 contains a higher rate of acrylic resins to filler pigments than other coatings. This higher rate of acrylic offers long-term weathering protection.
- High Volume Solids: 67% by weight solids affords Tough Stuff AC8020 the advantage of 9.6 mils. dry (244 microns) when applied at 1 gallon per 100 square feet. (.41 mils/m2) based on application over smooth nonporous surfaces.
- No Solvents: No pollution, odor, toxicity, or flammable solvents. Tough Stuff AC8020 is a water- based elastomer emulsion conforming to all U.S. federal and state air pollution standards.
- Color Matching: Tough Stuff AC8020 can be tinted to match most colors.
APPLICATION PREPARATION
- Cedar and Redwood: must be primed with Tough Stuff Primer PR3800 to stop bleed through.
- Heavy Build-Ups: exceeding 20 mils should be mechanically or chemically removed to the substrate.
- Masonry and Concrete: surface must be fully cured and should be clean and dry and free of oils, laitence and other foreign materials that may cause bad adhesion. pH levels higher than 11 must be neutralized prior to application. All new mortar and concrete less than 6 months old must be neutralized with 5% muratic acid and rinsed thoroughly.
- Galvanized Steel and Aluminum: should be primed with acid etching metal primer. New metal should be wiped with Toluene prior to priming to remove oils used in manufacturing.
- Structural Cracks: exceeding 1/16th of an inch should be filled with high quality paintable urethane or equal caulking and allowed to cure before recoating.
- Chalked Surface: should be power washed with soap and water and allowed to dry prior to application.
- Treating Mildew: Mildew must be removed by scrubbing with a solution of 16 ounces (approximately 1 liter) of household bleach with 2 ounces (60 ml.) of liquid detergent per gallon of water. Rinse clean and dry.
- Glossy Area: should be sanded and dust clean. Overhead areas such as under hangs should be washed to remove invisible residue that may interfere with adhesion.
- Gaps and Cracks: All gaps where rain can get behind the siding should be caulked with a high quality urethane caulk and allowed to cure before repainting.
- Loose Boards: Boards that have come loose should be nailed tight to avoid further movement. Nails set and filled flush with wood.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Tough Stuff AC8020 may be applied by conventional or airless spray equipment. Brush or roller may also be used for touch-up and edging work or for small areas unsuitable for spray applications. Airless spray is the most effective method for obtaining uniform film build. Back rolling will be necessary on rough surfaces to eliminate pinholes.]
Upon standing, the product will settle into a two stage suspension. It is necessary to thoroughly mix all Tough Stuff AC8020 containers prior to application. Use a slow speed mixer capable of mixing the entire contents.
Tough Stuff AC8020 has a rich thixotropic consistency. The addition of water reduces this thixotropic nature and decreases the ability to achieve heavy film builds with good vertical hold. The material is easily pumped and sprayed without thinning provided equipment is in good working condition and the coating is properly mixed and maintained at a minimum temperature of 60°F (16°C).
Existing hairline cracks should be filled by brushing or spraying with Tough Stuff AC8020 in sufficient quantity to totally hide the crack. All cracks larger than hairline should be considered as moving and should be routed, cleaned, and filled with a quality patching material.
All surfaces should be sprayed with multidirectional spray passes to assure positive coverage. Tough Stuff AC8020 must be applied in two separate coats to ensure proper film builds, cure rate, and a pinhole-free continuous film. The second coat shall be applied in a direction perpendicular to the first coat after it has dried. All surfaces must be uniformly coated and be free from voids, pinholes, or blisters.
The theoretical thickness given for coverage is based on smooth nonporous surfaces. Actual quantities required to achieve the minimum dry film thickness will depend upon the surface texture, method of application, and weather conditions. It is the responsibility of the applicator to apply sufficient material to achieve the minimum dry thickness required. The amount of material being applied can be measured on smooth surfaces by use of a wet film thickness gauge. For textured surfaces, a smooth board is placed on the surface of the wall. Tough Stuff AC8020 applied at the rate of one gallon per 100 square feet (.41/m2) will theoretically yield 9.6 dry mils (244 dry microns).
As work proceeds, the applicator must periodically check the quantity used and compare to square feet coated. If adequate quantities have not been used, adjust accordingly and apply additional material to previously coated areas.
It is recommended that a minimum of 15 dry mils of Tough Stuff AC8020 be applied to all vertical surfaces. All surfaces must be uniformly coated and be free from voids or pinholes to assure waterproofness.
Tough Stuff AC8020 has been tested over a wide variety of substrates, utilizing many different brands, types and sized of conventional and airless spray equipment. Airless equipment is best for field application, with the following recommended minimum:

.75 gal./minute minimum output capacity |
| Gun: |
Any airless handgun compatible with pumps used |
| Screen Size: |
30 Mesh or larger |
| Tip: |

LIMITATIONS
- The application of the coating has certain limitations controlled by ambient air temperature. DO NOT apply Tough Stuff AC8020 when air temperature is 50°F or less. Coating should not be applied when there is a threat of rain or the relative humidity is in excess of 90%.
APPLICATION TIPS
- Avoid working in direct sunlight.
- Windy days may also blow overspray in existing work and leave a sand blown effect.
- Always work down wind.
- Coverage rates should be gauged as work progresses to maintain proper mil thickness. A good technique is to work in sections from top down using natural break points while maintaining a wet edge.
- Larger production work will require a large spray unit capable of high volume output.
- Back rolling will be necessary on rough surfaces and concrete block to work into surfaces and eliminate pinholes.
THINNING AND CLEANUP
- THINNING OF THE MATERIAL IS NOT ADVISED OR RECOMMENDED.
- Clean equipment with soap and hot water.
- Brushes may require mineral spirits for the final rinse.
- Water and TSP should be used to thoroughly flush spray equipment. Purge the water from the system with mineral spirits and leave solvents in the line until next use.
